Canada has been going through a major political crisis for many years. The country is also preparing to experience a future economic “war” with the United States.
“I intend to resign as party leader and prime minister once the party has chosen its next leader”declared Justin Trudeau to journalists in Ottawa (capital of Canada). After ten years in power, Justin Trudeau announced that he would resign from his post as Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, this Monday, January 6, 2025.

For almost nine years, Canada has been going through a major political crisis. A crisis which has weakened the “leadership” of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The 53-year-old’s popularity has dropped in the polls. A thorny situation for Trudeau who had to face the future legislative elections in the country which must be held in October at the latest. The party whose leader he has just resigned is extremely low in the polls. His own camp holds him responsible for this fall and discontent has been felt.
The Liberal Party therefore finds itself in the minority in Parliament and “offers” twenty points ahead in the polls to Canadian conservative rival, Pierre Poilievre. By the Canadian population, Justin Trudeau is held responsible for the high inflation which is plaguing the North American country. He would also be seen as responsible for the housing and public services crisis which handicaps this State. Dramatic twist, the “surprise” resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland caused turmoil within the government. Indeed, she disagreed with Justin Trudeau in his way of managing the future economic war with the United States and the arrival of Donald Trump in the White House.
An economic war with the United States?
The arrival of Donald Trump as president of the United States is also one of the reasons which pushed Justin Trudeau to resign. Indeed, upon his arrival at the White House, Trump promised toimpose 25% customs duties on Canada and Mexico. Taxes which will weaken the country’s economy and which could create a financial war between these two North American neighbors.
For his part, Donald Trump was quick to comment on the resignation of the Canadian Prime Minister on his social network while omitting one idea: “ If Canada merged with the United States, there would be no customs dutiestaxes would drop considerably and Canada would be TOTALLY SAFE against the threat of Russian and Chinese ships that constantly surround it. Together, what a great nation it would be!!! »he said. Donald Trump’s wish would be to make Canada the 51st state of the United States.
