Last June left for the Gaza Strip, MP Rima Hassan aboard the Freedom Flatilla Madleen ship. This month, precisely on July 18, it will be the turn of MP Gabrielle Cathala to embark for Gaza aboard the Handala, notably with the Emma Fourreau MEP.
Who is Gabrielle Cathala
Elected from the 6th district of Val-d’Oise, Gabrielle Cathala has been an LFI deputy since July 18, 2024, when she was elected to the legislative anticipated under the label of the Union of the left. She won these elections with 43.64% of the votes expressed (21,326 votes), ahead of the candidate together, at 33.05% (i.e. 16,149 votes). This is the first time that this constituency has changed left.
Born in Talence in Gironde in a middle -class family, her mother is a nurse and her father working in wine. Gabrielle Cathala graduated in criminal law and international law and subsequently entered the humanitarian aid at the end of the university and became in particular in the fall of 2017, project manager at the French Embassy Congo-Brazzaville.
Back in France in 2019, she decided to redirect herself to politics:
“I was an activist young socialists at university before leaving. I thought a lot and I wanted to go back to political action. She then became parliamentary councilor within the LFI group where she is responsible for the follow -up of the Law Commission, then became secretary general of the same parliamentary group, after Clémence watched
In 2024, she was part of a commission aimed at determining the impact of the Olympic Games in terms of public freedom. She denounced in a referral of September 11, 2024, “arbitrary” detentions and various violations of the right to respect for privacy.
Freedom Flotilla
The project is to reproduce what was done last month with Madleen, that is to say trying to force the blockade in force on the Gaza Strip, and this going aboard a ship, the Handala, directly on the Gaza coast, with provisions for the local population on board. Last month, Rima Hassan, Greta Thunberg as well as several other activists had embarked on the Madleen, another ship of Freedom Flotilla but had arrested in full international waters, even before having been able to reach the territorial waters of Gaza. They had then been imprisoned and taken to Israel, before being expelled in their country of origin.
Gabrielle Cathala therefore announced on the networks, that she would be part of the passengers who will be on this next ship towards Gaza.
