In the same vein as for several years, Disney continues to adapt its classics into live action shots. Next on the list, Moana. To play the legendary heroine, it is the young Catherine Laga’aia. But who is she?
Moana: Legend at the End of the World arrives in theaters on July 10, 2026. But this Monday, November 17, 2025, the first trailer was released. The opportunity to discover the first Dwayne Johnson and Catherine Laga’aia in this new live adaptation. As a bonus, the famous HeiHei chicken makes a short appearance at the end of the trailer.

With this first trailer, Disney succeeds in mixing nostalgia and renewal: the Polynesian universe of Moana takes on an even more realistic dimension, with grandiose landscapes and a sea more alive than ever. Finally, the soundtrack seems promising: we can sense covers or homages to cult songs, while expecting some new features, perhaps driven by the vibrant cultural identity of the characters.
A story of roots
Like the Disney heroine, Catherine Laga’aia comes from an island. Born in Australia in Sydney on December 17, 2006. And yes, she is only 18 years old. Laga’aia comes from a family deeply rooted in Pacific culture. His grandfather also comes from Fa’aala, Palali in Savai’i, and his grandmother from Leulumoega Tuai on the island of Upolu in Samoa. This Samoan affiliation is therefore not a simple detail. For her, this role is an opportunity to celebrate Pacific Island culture. In a statement, Laga’aia said: “ I am honored to have the opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.“

A revelation
Professionally, Catherine is not a confirmed figure in Hollywood. His most visible role to date? An appearance in the series The Lost Flower of Alice Hart. Its beginnings are therefore modest, but its potential is seen as great. The remake of Moana in fact marks its first major foray into cinema, a bold bet on the part of Disney.
And we can say that talent is in the genes. Indeed, Catherine is the daughter of Jay Laga’aia, a well-known actor. He notably played a role in Star Wars. He played Captain Typho in episodes 2 and 3.

An ambitious production
For the adaptation, the live-action film will therefore be directed by Thomas Kail, already noted for Hamilton (2020). The casting is solid. Dwayne Johnson returns to his role as Maui, whose voice he plays in the cartoon. John Tui, Frankie Adams and Rena Owen complete the cast.
