Toethe latest success of Netflix, a card with the audience of the platform. But why such a craze?
Context
This June 6, 2025 was released on Netflix at the end, American psychological thriller written produced and produced by Tyler Perry and staging actress Taraji P. Henson, which we could see in particular in the shadow figures.
Known for having played in Gone Girl or Don’t Look Up, Tyler Perry offers us here a story full of intrigue, mysteries and does not fail to capture our attention.
At the end tells how a Janiyah Watkinson (Taraji P. Henson), a single mother, when she faces a series of financial problems, seems to fall from Charybde to Scylla when she is despite herself involved in a robbery. Helpless and totally at the mercy of the circumstances, she then finds herself in the center of suspicions.
A review for those we don’t see
This film gives a voice to all the forgotten of the system: those who have trouble feeding, those that we do not see – or rather, that we do not want to see.
True satire of our time, it constitutes a cry of despair of a woman who fights, but that everyone ignores. Neither institutions, social services nor passers -by pay him attention. The hostage taking then becomes the only moment when, finally, all eyes turn to it. For the first time, she has a voice. She can be heard. This is his last attempt to listen to it. This is what this film shows us: a last call for help from a person in distress, this time, impossible to ignore.
Above all, the ambient silence that surrounds the protagonist is used here to denounce the lack of help in an ever more brutal American society. The economic violence that it is confronted with, systemic racism, contempt towards women and towards the poor: all this contributes to its collapse. Tyler Perry gives a face to this woman that the media and politicians would have quickly classified as “crazy”, and he shows that the drama is collective: his sinking is our failure.
More broadly, all those who suffer from the system are our failure, all those whom society pushes to fall into delinquency are proof. It is our responsibility, as a people, as a society.
