The initiative Deep Rising, dedicated to protecting the sea from deep sea mining, has turned the seabed in NFTs. He has done it with campaign “The biggest ocean dispute in the world”, whose objective is to raise awareness in society at a global level of the environmental impact of mining of the oceans.

And certain countries and private companies want to make use of the seabed to extract materials such as nickel and other metals rare, which are used for the manufacture of electric batteries, solar panels and other essential instruments for sustainable energy and the fight against fossil fuels.

Specifically, in the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ), which covers more than 4.5
million square kilometers in the Pacific Ocean, has been designated 3 million square kilometers for possible mining exploitation. From Deep Rising they point out that the extraction of elements in this area could have
negative consequences for both the ocean and the planet as a whole, since it represents an important carbon sink and, therefore, plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change.

For this reason, the campaign has divided this area into 8.1 billion GPS coordinates destined for possible mining exploitation and representing the population of the planet. Thus, each person can claim its coordinate, in the name of humanity and future generations.
This refers to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which establishes the seabed as the common heritage of humanity.

The campaign is, in reality, a petition for the preservation of the marine ecosystem. But, unlike a traditional one, in this one each person will receive some unique coordinates in the form of NFT. As described by Deep Rising, the certificate issued is called Deepsea NFT and it is in 90 languages, it is not
exchangeable for profit and is represented by deep-sea life forms.

The initiative points out that NFTs are minted on the blockchain MultiversX, a blockchain recognized for its minimal ecological footprintin collaboration with Coinweb. Deep Rising explains on its website that MultversX’s energy consumption is drastically lower than other networks, with only 0.04 grams of CO2 per transaction. In addition, it ensures that it is using a tokenization process called Merkelization that minimizes transactions and the carbon footprint.

“The largest ocean dispute in the world” seeks to raise awareness about the critical importance of the deep ocean floor, which constitutes the largest habitable space on Earth and which plays a vital role in stabilizing the planet’s climate.
The campaign aims to unite people from around the world in a symbolic reclamation of the seabed, and by using blockchain technology ensures that each participant’s unique contribution is permanently recorded. This is how it creates a enduring record of global support for the oceans.

Additionally, Deep Rising explains that the campaign will culminate with a intervention at the General Assembly of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in July 2025. There he will present the message of this movement on behalf of all those who have joined, demanding that Article 136 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which designates the seabed outside the national jurisdiction as the common heritage of humanity.

The documentary “Deep Rising”

Deep Rising is also raising awareness about the problem through a documentary, available through the Gathr streaming platform. Narrated by actor Jason Momoa, the production brings closer the mining exploitation of the seabed, the linked economic interests and possible solutions to protect the ecosystem.
