2025 is coming to an end and it is a year filled with significant events, here and elsewhere. A few days before opening the page of 2026, let’s look back at 10 events that left a lasting mark on the news this year.

2025 will be remembered as a year of historic turning points and strong moments, both in France and internationally. Between national commemorations, powerful political upheavals, sporting exploits, cultural tragedies and diplomatic advances, this year has shaped our present with a certain intensity.

1 – Return of Trump to power

The year 2025 was marked by the return of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States. It was a major political upheaval that had international repercussions. Re-elected to lead the world’s leading power, Trump has left his mark on American foreign policy, notably by influencing negotiations around the Middle East conflict and redefining Washington’s strategic priorities vis-à-vis its allies and rivals. Donald Trump has occupied much of the media landscape this year.

2 – Ceasefire in Gaza

In October 2025After two years of deadly conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, a ceasefire agreement signedmarking a major step towards the end of hostilities. Negotiated under the aegis of American President Donald Trump and international mediators, this agreement enabled the suspension of fighting and the release of numerous hostages in exchange for prisoners. The situation nevertheless remains extremely fragile between Israel and Gaza.

3 – Death of Pope Francis

THE April 21, 2025a religious and international event had a profound impact on the world: the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88. It was at the Vatican after a long pontificate that began in 2013. The sovereign pontiff, widely recognized for his social commitment in favor of the excluded, social justice and interreligious dialogue, left a significant mark. After his disappearance, it is Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost who is called Leo XIV who takes over. Aged 69, he is the first pope from the United States.

4 – Paris Saint Germain wins the Champions League

On a sporting level, 2025 will remain engraved in the annals of French football with the victory for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Champions League. It was May 31, 2025 at the Allianz Arena in Munich against Inter Milan. This is a historic feat for the Parisian club. The highly anticipated final was followed by millions of supporters in France and abroad. But if this triumph aroused immense joy, it was also marred by excesses in the streets of Paris after the match. Scenes of celebrations degenerated into clashes with the police, causing dozens of arrests.

5 – The Jubillar trial

The affair Delphine Jubillar kept France in suspense. The trial of Cedric Jubillar began on September 22 before the Tarn Assize Court. He is accused of murdering his wife Delphinedisappeared on the night of December 15 to 16, 2020 in Cagnac-les-Mines. A judgment which attracted significant media attention. Despite the absence of the victim’s body, the jurors found Cédric guilty and sentenced him to 30 years of criminal imprisonment in October 2025. This decision strongly revived the debate on the presumption of innocence.

6 – The Louvre victim of a historic robbery

THE October 19, 2025THE Louvre museum in Paris was the scene of a spectacular heist. In less than eight minutes, disguised thieves stole eight pieces from the French Crown Jewels collection. Jewelry estimated at tens of millions of euros. It was one of the largest thefts in the history of the museum, sending shock waves through the cultural world. This event subsequently raised real questions about museum security.

7 – 10 years of the attacks of November 13

In November 2025France paid tribute to the victims of the attacks November 13, 2015. It was ten years after these terrorist attacks which left 130 dead in Paris and Saint-Denis. Solemn ceremonies, marked by contemplation in front of the targeted sites, from the Bataclan to the Stade de France, brought together families of victims, political leaders and citizens. The President of the Republic inaugurated a new memorial garden dedicated to the victims in the center of Paris. The emotion was palpable, between silence, flower laying and speeches.

8 – 50th Cesar ceremony

There 50th Cesar ceremonyheld on February 28, 2025 at the Olympia in Pariswas one of the great cultural events of the year. Chaired by icon Catherine Deneuve, this anniversary edition highlighted the excellence of French cinema in front of an audience of stars, producers and directors. The movie Emilia Pérez by Jacques Audiard dominated the evening by winning seven trophiesincluding those for best film, best direction and best adaptation. Among the highlights, the presence of American actress Julia Roberts, awarded an honorary César for her entire career, also aroused the enthusiasm of the public.

9 – 10 years of the attacks against Charlie Hebdo

In January 2025France commemorated with emotion the 10 years since the terrorist attack of January 7, 2015 against the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdowhich left 12 dead in its Parisian premises. On the occasion of this anniversary, numerous ceremonies took place throughout the country. Tributes took place in front of the newspaper’s former headquarters in Paris. There was the publication of a special issue of Charlie Hebdo dedicated to freedom of expression, as well as educational gatherings to remind people of the importance of freedom of expression in a democratic society.

10 – Typhoon Ragasa

In the fall of 2025, the typhoon Ragasa emerged as one of the most powerful weather phenomena of the year, hitting several countries in East and Southeast Asia hard. This intense tropical cyclone first swept across the Philippinesthen caused torrential rain and strong winds in Taiwanwhere the rupture of a dike led to the flooding of inhabited areas and caused at least fifteen deaths. In China, the passage of Ragasa led to the evacuation of million peoplethe closure of schools and thefts, and significant material damage in the southern provinces. This typhoon also disrupted Hong Kong and affected the north of Vietnam before losing its strength.
