In recent years Samsung He has put his experience and technological knowledge at the service of those who suffer from ELA, with Tallk; of people with autism, with afear; or of those who have speech disorders, with Impulse. Now, the company is still looking for how to help people through technology with “The mind guardian”, A video game based on artificial intelligence oriented to the identification of cognitive deterioration.
As explained by Samsung, it is a gamified application which allows testing Memory Self -Assessment with the intention of being able to detect possible signs of dementia and cognitive impairments, which usually appear in early phases of diseases such as Alzheimer’s. It is a condition that, according to the company, only in Spain it reaches 800,000 people.
The project has been carried out in collaboration with the creative agency Cheil, The Research Center in Telecommunication Technologies of the University of Vigo (Atlantic) and the translational neuroscience group of the Galicia Health Research Institute. In addition, it has the endorsement of the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) and the Spanish Society of Psychiatry and Mental Health (SEPSM).
As the company points out in a statement, “The Mind Guardian” is designed For people over 55 years of age without obvious symptoms of cognitive impairment. It combines three elements: the gamification of conventional memory tests used in socio -health environments, artificial intelligence analysis, and automatic learning.
“The Mind Guardian” has a playful approach and an intuitive and accessible interface for Evaluate different types of memory through three tests. To analyze the episodic memory the user makes a tour observing lists of elements that will then have to identify. For procedural memory there is an agility and coordination test in which a circle in motion with the finger must be followed. And for semantic memory associations between images must be established.
With this, the company expects to help fight the so -called “White Bata Syndrome”, that is, the fear of conducting evidence in health environments. Samsung says that “The Mind Guardian” is a simple and universal access solution that allows possible to detect possible signs of deterioration after a 45 -minute session. It offers an initial alert for the subsequent consultation of medical professionals for diagnosis and possible therapies and treatments.
“With ‘The Mind Guardian’, we bring the large -scale screening to homes, facilitating early detection that can make a difference in the quality of life of patients, their families and their caregivers”, Said Alfonso Fernández, CMO & Head of Direct to Consumer by Samsung Iberia, in the statement. “The launch of this solution marks a milestone in the tools available for the detection of cognitive impairment signals in an early phase”
The development of “The Mind Guardian”
The game see the light after years of research and work. As Samsung points out, the research project began in 2014, with the ideation of a battery of six video games to evaluate the episodic, executive memory, working memory, semantic memory, procedural memory and attention; Each of them based on a conventional test.
Between 2016 and 2023 they were carried out pilot tests of these games In different day centers, associations of older people and entities linked to the treatment of dementias. Samsung indicates that the most recent results cover 152 users with cross validation values that reach 97% in precision (Accuracy) and confirm the usability and acceptability of the instrument by the participants.
Additionally, the usability validation Within the framework of a European project, with 150 additional people in different countries using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM).
In 2022 Samsung and the University of Vigo began to explore the possibility of offering tests In free application format for self -assessment in home. And last year a collaboration agreement was signed between the University of Vigo and Samsung Iberia to boost the development and made available of “The Mind Guardian”, whose rights are the educational entity.
Innatial DevelopersGalician firm expert in Android systems integration, has also participated in the project.
In this sense, the role of Samsung is the technological partner, And he claims to have contributed the necessary resources to climb the project from the academic field to its transformation into an application, focusing on the design and usability to optimize the user experience. “Precision medicine is the future of health, but to apply it effectively in the field of mental health and neurological diseases, it is essential to have accessible solutions that allow evaluating the functioning of the brain in a simple and effective way”, They point out from the technological one.
“The Mind Guardian” is available in Spanish at Galaxy Store and Play Store. It is compatible with Android tablets with version of the 8 or higher operating system.
