Qatar Airways and Google have marked a new milestone in the advertising sector with the activation of the “Sky Studio Challenge”, a creative experiment carried out entirely on board at 35,000 feet, thanks to Qatar Airways’ Starlink network and Gemini’s video and image generation models.
The challenge, developed during a 15-hour journey on November 17 between Doha and Atlanta, addressed for the first time the complete production of two advertising spots – from script, scene generation, editing, rendering to final loading – while the plane remained in flight. Starlink’s infrastructure enabled speeds comparable to a home network, enabling large file transfers, real-time cloud workflows, and simultaneous collaboration with teams on the ground.
The initiative brought together two renowned figures from cinema and advertising: PJ Accetturo, known for his viral productions, such as that of the NBA with Kalshi; and Torey Kohara, director specializing in technological spots for Google.
Both different approaches served to demonstrate that the combination of generative AI and high-speed connectivity can break down the traditional limits of audiovisual production.
The videos, published on Qatar Airways’ YouTube channel, will be evaluated through audience engagement for a week.
For Qatar Airways – recently recognized by Skytrax as the best world airline for the ninth time and which already operates more than 100 aircraft with Starlink – the challenge has represented a tangible materialization of its connectivity strategy. In the words of Babar Rahman, SVP Marketing & Corporate Communications, “It demonstrates why we’re leading the industry in inflight connectivity. Completing two announcements during a 15-hour flight was only possible because we’re already flying with the fastest, most reliable Wi-Fi in the sky.”
The activation thus opens a new scenario for generative advertising, redefining production environments and suggesting that in the future “flying” may not be a limit to creating content, but rather a creative study in itself.
