Netflix and Filmin have reached an agreement to bring part of the catalog selected by the Spanish platform to the Netflix service in Spain. The collaboration is articulated through monthly collections of films and documentaries chosen by the Filmin editorial team, which will be available in a specific section within Netflix.
The initiative starts this October 1 with “October of mystery that comes from Filmin”, a selection linked to the Halloween season. From now on, on the first day of each month Netflix will add a new collection made up of ten titles licensed and selected by Filmin.
The collaboration represents a unique movement between two streaming services that maintain different proposals and dimensions, and allows Filmin to extend the reach of some of the titles that have been part of its catalog to the Netflix audience in Spain.
The operation of the agreement has been proposed on a rotating basis. Each collection will remain available for two months: when a new monthly selection arrives, the previous month’s selection will remain available for an additional month. In this way, users will be able to simultaneously find two collections selected by Filmin, while the titles rotate throughout the year.
The structure will also allow the selections to be linked to different moments on the calendar. Netflix and Filmin give as examples mystery films around Halloween or award-winning films coinciding with the Oscar season.
Editorial curation is, precisely, one of the central elements of collaboration. Filmin thus transfers to Netflix one of the characteristics with which it has built its proposal for almost two decades: the selection and recommendation of films and documentaries aimed at an audience especially interested in cinema.
Netflix highlights the differences in audiences and positioning of both platforms as something of value
Netflix highlights the differences between the audiences and positioning of both platforms as one of the values of the alliance. “We deeply admire Filmin’s commitment to cinema and documentaries. They have been able to build a very close relationship with a demanding and specialized audience, while at Netflix we work every day with the focus on entertaining the widest and most diverse audience in the world”explains Diego Ávalos, Vice President of Content for Spain, Portugal and Türkiye at Netflix.
The manager believes that this combination makes both companies “perfect partners” and will allow us to offer more films and documentaries selected directly by the Filmin editorial team. For the Spanish platform, the agreement is mainly an opportunity to expand the audience of the films it selects. “That the largest streaming service in the world has noticed us is an enormous recognition of the almost 20 years of work and love for cinema behind our project”says Juan Carlos Tous, CEO and Founder of Filmin. “Our goal is to bring the cinema that we are passionate about to the maximum number of viewers and this alliance with Netflix gives us a unique opportunity to achieve this”he adds.
The agreement thus establishes a relationship in which Filmin contributes something more than the licensed titles: it transfers its selection criteria and its editorial brand to the Netflix environment, since the collections will be identified as proposals from the Spanish platform.
For Netflix, collaboration means periodically incorporating new films and documentaries through a formula of external and thematic selection. For Filmin, it offers a new window for titles that have already been part of its proposal and the possibility of presenting them to a broader audience.
