Josep Pedrerol already has a new television destiny. Mediaset España has confirmed the signing of the journalist, who will join the group next season to lead “El Chiringuito”, starting a new stage for one of the most influential sports formats on Spanish television.
The agreement, announced on July 21, comes just one day after the program said goodbye to Atresmedia, where it has remained for more than a decade.
The company has explained that the contract will be long-term and that Pedrerol will arrive accompanied by his usual team of collaborators, maintaining the formula that has turned the space into a benchmark for football debate and sports entertainment. However, Mediaset has not yet specified the exact premiere date or the network on which the program will be broadcast, two of the main questions raised by the announcement.
What they have confirmed from the program itself is that it will be broadcast at the same usual time, even if the network changes. On the other hand, the new logo that will accompany “El Chiringuito” in this new stage has been announced.
“Mediaset does not sign Josep Pedrerol, it signs a great sports team. We arrived with more enthusiasm than ever and the new Chiringuito will not leave anyone indifferent. Mediaset was my unfinished business and it has given me a love that I did not imagine. We are going to have fun”the journalist noted after his incorporation became official.
From the group, Jaime Guerra, Director of the Content Production Division, has highlighted that the arrival of the format means “a great added value” for its entertainment offer linked to sports news.
And in recent months the program has demonstrated a remarkable ability to boost its audiences when it coincides with major football events. After the elimination of FC Barcelona at the hands of Atlético de Madrid in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, “El Chiringuito de Jugones” reached a 7% audience share and gathered 766,000 viewers, posting the second best figure of its season and leading among the male audience with an 11.9% share. More recently, the space also took advantage of the celebration of the World Cup won by Spain to bid farewell to Atresmedia with more than 4% screen share.
With this move, Mediaset incorporates one of the most recognized figures in Spanish sports journalism. After starting his career in radio and presenting with Michael Robinson programs such as “El díabefore” and “El día siempre” on Canal+, Pedrerol directed “Punto Pelota” on Intereconomía before landing at Atresmedia in 2013. Since 2014 he has led “El Chiringuito de Jugones”, a format that has transcended television to become a digital and social phenomenon, recognized with awards such as the Iris Award, the Golden Microphone or the Golden Television Antenna.
