The films that are up for the Oscars are already known. Last week the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations of the actors, actresses and productions competing for the prestigious statuettes. Among them could have been “The Great Reset”, which although it is not a finalist, has become the first film created entirely with artificial intelligence under human supervision to be officially shortlisted for the awards.
Freepik tools have been used, along with others, in the production of the film
Behind her there is a double Spanish seal. On the one hand, it has been carried out by the director Daniel H. Torrado and, on the other, it has relied on, among others, the solutions and tools of Freepik, the Malaga technology company specialized in generative AI and stock graphic resources. In addition, it has had the Spanish production companies Virtual World Pictures and Canary Film Factory.
All of them have been leaving their mark on the history of the audiovisual industry over the last few months. First, because “The great reset” is considered the first major Spanish film made with artificial intelligence. Second, because it has managed to be the first created with AI to premiere on the Hollywood commercial circuit. And third, for being the first film made with AI to be considered eligible for the 98th edition of the Oscars, which will be presented on March 15.
“The Great Reset” presents an apocalyptic thriller in which a rogue hacker unleashes a plan to collapse the global system, but his daughter, Emma, embarks on a mission against time to save humanity and the world. Through technology, the film proposes a powerful cinematographic adventure that draws on the classics of the action genre.
What has been achieved by the film reflects the advance of artificial intelligence in the film industry, and more specifically, it consolidates the role of
Freepik as a strategic ally in Hollywood. And, in addition to this production, Freepik tools have also been previously used in the film “Here”, by director Robert Zemeckis; or in the series “House of David”, on Amazon Prime Video.
In all of them, Freepik solutions have been used at different points in the process: “upscalling” to improve the resolution and quality of specific static images; the generation of scenes, the animation of images that have been previously recorded, or the generation of voices for the characters.
Versatility, the company says, is what is allowing them to consolidate their presence in Hollywood. “The possibilities and resources offered by the tool are so many that industry professionals can use it for whatever they need: whether very specific aspects, such as improving an image, or much broader aspects, such as having an idea and its complete execution with technology.“, explains Sofía López, AI Growth & Marketing at Freepik, in statements to reason.Why.
The growth and expansion of Freepik in the field of artificial intelligence is due, as they explain, to a vision that has embraced technology from the first moment as a benefit for creative teams, and to a proposal that has sought to offer them the best tools and models, both from third parties and their own, with a collaborative approach that has prioritized creativity.
And they find the eligibility of “The Great Reset” for the Oscars as a reaffirmation of this philosophy. “It is a milestone that gives certainty to something that we have always sensed, that this is a technological revolution. It is an equivalent to what the transition from analog film to digital meant.“, assures López. “It was evident that, to the extent that AI has impacted users and creative professionals, it would reach its maximum expression in the film industry, which is the Oscars.”.
In this sense, he considers that the official preselection of “The great reset” for the Academy Awards will be a turning point, a starting point, and will open the door for more and more films that are entirely generated with AI or that have a large part of AI to gain a greater presence in festivals and competitions.
“AI is opening up many creative processes and opportunities”
This does not mean, however, that it will leave creative human talent in the background. “30 years ago people were shocked because graphic design went through a computer. Now that’s standardized.“, comments López. “AI is a tool that is empowering creative profiles, those who have ideas and the ability to tell stories, giving them more autonomy and making their work more efficient. It is opening many processes and opportunities”.
With this milestone, Freepik consolidates itself as an active part of a new way of making films, where artificial intelligence emerges as a real tool at the service of creativity, narrative and professional production on a global scale. “We are the trusted tool for certain points of the creative process. We want to be the space where professionals find the best environment to create their projects, creatives, films or campaigns“, says Sofía López to reason.Why.
The first versions of “The Great Reset” were presented throughout 2025 in professional forums such as the European Film Market at the Berlinale, the Marché du Film at the Cannes Festival or the American Film Market. The production company and distributor involved have announced international distribution agreements to release the film in different markets throughout this year.
