Death penalty: surviving two lethal injections, is it possible?

Christa Pike, a 50-year-old American woman sentenced to death, survived the death penalty. Her executioners administered two supposedly lethal injections which were not enough to kill the woman convicted of murder.

This is news that we don’t see passed around often. Christine Pike survived the reaper. Sentenced to the death penalty after the murder of her classmate Colleen Slemmer in 1995. For the first time in over 200 years, the state of Tennessee would execute a woman. We will still have to wait.

The details of the facts

The killing began on Wednesday September 30 at 7:27 p.m. (1:27 a.m. French time). Journalists, his lawyer and anti-death penalty associations were present as witnesses. The curtains of the death chamber are drawn and a first lethal dose is administered to Christa Pike. But nothing goes as planned. The American stay conscious and asks the prison official if it is normal for his arm to be in this state.

At 8:26 p.m., she was stung a second time… but still nothing. Witnesses report that the detainee snored By the time the microphones connecting the execution room to the witnesses were cut, it was 8:53 p.m. Christa Pike is aliveshe was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. “What happened is singular and unprecedented” noted Robin M. Maher, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center. This execution should have been the thirtieth since the start of the year in the United States

What product is used to cause death?

It is with pentobarbital that Christa Pike should be executed. This product is a medicine from the barbiturate family which are central nervous system depressants that reduce brain activity. It is only with a very high dose that pentobarbital can cause profound loss of consciousness, respiratory depression and fatal cardiovascular arrest. In Tennessee, as well as other states, pentobarbital is used alone to cause death. In general, this product is coupled with a sedative, a paralyzing agent and a product aimed at causing cardiac arrest.

How did Christa Pike survive?

The question arises as the situation is unprecedented. The Death Penalty Information Center puts forward several points that may explain why Christa Pike is still alive. The difficulty that the agents had in accessing the veins and broken veins would be the main cause of the failure. Authorities have not revealed details of doses administered either. It is possible that the pentobarbital was deteriorated at the time of the two injections.

Last May Tony Carruthers, another death row inmate in Tennessee, also escaped the death penalty. This time no injection was given because the execution team was unable to establish the secondary intravenous line required by the protocol. The killing was stopped after approximately 1 hour 30 minutes of attempts.

In the United States other methods are used for death sentences. Some states use the electric chair or nitrogen asphyxiation. In very rare cases hanging, the gas chamber and execution by bullet may be used. Lethal injection remains the preferred means across states using the death penalty. Pending an execution of the same type as that of Christa Pike has been suspended in Tennessee.
