Haven-1, The first commercial space station will be launched into Earth orbit next year by SpaceX, the space innovation company owned by Elon Musk. Its first visitors will be able to occupy it in 2026, but Vast, The development company has already shared the details of its design with the intention of generating excitement and capturing the attention of those interested.
The company assures that it has focused on aspects such as comfort, productivity, sophistication, functionality focused on people, technological advances and scientific research. The design team was led by Peter Russell-Clarke, previously an industrial designer at Apple, and advised by Andrew Feustel, a veteran NASA astronaut.
Comfort for quality of life
Vast describes Haven-1’s interior design as warm and welcoming, which he says reflects his commitment to prioritize well-being and experience of astronauts and crew members, as well as their vision of making space accessible to all. The intention has been to contribute to a better quality of life for long-term missions.
“Astronauts living in zero gravity pose unique design challenges. As Vast points out, the design has prioritized the astronauts’ experience on board. As described, these are received at the station by a elegant and functional designwhich can be seen in soft, padded interior surfaces and in the veneer slats, as well as in the optimized loading compartments and storage spaces.
Haven-1 has four private rooms for the crew, offering spaces to rest and recharge. In them, those who occupy the station will be able to change, enjoy entertainment or communicate online with Earth thanks to SpaceX’s Starlink connectivity. Each room also has a built-in storage compartment, dressing table and a personalized toiletry kit.
The sleeping experience has also been key in the design of Haven-1. According to Vast, sleeping in zero gravity has always been a sticking point due to uncomfortable restraint systems. The company has sought to solve this with a system – still patent pending – that, judging by the images shared, presents a queen size bed that provides uniform pressure throughout the night and adapts to each person.

Functionality to contribute to the future
The station has a common areawhich is a multifunctional space where crew members can meet to work, eat, or relax. It has a volume of 24 m³, and includes a vaulted window to observe the space and a foldable multipurpose table.

This area also allows physical exercise, essential to maintain bone and cardiovascular health in zero gravity. With a system of bands and anchors for the body, crew members will be able to perform resistance exercises for both the upper and lower parts of the body.

The station also has a laboratory, and from Vast they point out that it is the world’s first microgravity research, development and manufacturing platform on a commercial space station. This can also be controlled and monitored remotely.
