Anthropic reinforces its presence in Europe with the opening of its first office in Spain. The artificial intelligence company that created Claude has chosen Madrid to establish its seventh headquarters on the continent, after London, Dublin, Paris, Zurich, Munich and Milan, and has appointed Cristina Pitarch Country Manager for Spain.

The opening responds, according to the company, to the growth that the use of its tools is experiencing in the Spanish market. According to the Anthropic Economic Index, the adoption of Claude in Spain is 2.7 times higher than expected based on the size of its population.

The company also arrives with a relevant client portfolio in the country. Santander, CaixaBank, BBVA, Telefónica, Amadeus, Ferrovial and Indra already use Claude in different areas, from programming and cybersecurity to engineering or technology applied to the travel sector.

Cristina Pitarch will direct Anthropic in Spain

Leading the new office will be Cristina Pitarch, who has more than 15 years of professional experience in companies such as Google or Salesforce. Before joining Anthropic, she was General Director for EMEA at Google Cloud Security, a position in which she worked with information systems managers on digital transformation and security projects.

“Spain is home to some of the largest companies in Europe and the most innovative start-ups. There are already teams that are using Claude in large-scale projects in the banking, aerospace, infrastructure or travel sectors, for example”Pitarch pointed out in an official statement. The directive considers that Spain can also play a role that transcends the national market. “The country has all the necessary ingredients to lead AI security, not only in southern Europe, but also as a reference for the entire Spanish-speaking world”he assures.

The new Country Manager points out that the opening will allow Anthropic to have a local team and establish more concrete commitments with the Spanish ecosystem, maintaining the company’s focus on the safe and responsible development of artificial intelligence.

The arrival in Madrid occurs at a time of Anthropic’s international expansion and growing competition among large artificial intelligence companies to establish direct relationships with companies and organizations that are incorporating generative models into their operations.

Anthropic has detailed some of the uses that its Spanish clients are already making of Claude:

  • Telefónica uses Claude and Claude Code for tasks related to software development and security, including the detection of possible vulnerabilities and the streamlining of development and validation processes.
  • In the field of infrastructure, Ferrovial uses Claude to support the design of complex civil engineering projects, automating some tasks that require a lot of time.
  • Amadeus, for its part, works with Anthropic to facilitate access to travel-related information and functionalities within development environments based on artificial intelligence, including tools such as Claude Code.

The implementation of Anthropic in Spain will also have an aspect aimed at developers and entrepreneurs. Coinciding with the opening, the company has collaborated with ISDI to support its “Ambassadors” initiative, which seeks to create local communities around Claude. Madrid currently has eight Claude ambassadors and, according to the company, the most recent community meeting brought together more than 350 attendees.

“Madrid is full of people who create with Claude, but what we were missing were spaces where everyone could meet”explains Javier Gascón Araujo, ambassador of Claude Community Madrid. The initiative seeks to organize meetings to share knowledge, show applications of technology and work on specific problems.

With the Madrid office, Anthropic thus establishes a direct presence in a market in which Claude is already being used by some of the main Spanish companies and from which it also aspires to strengthen its relationship with the artificial intelligence ecosystem of the Spanish-speaking world.
