Over the next few years, Spain will witness an extraordinary astronomical phenomenon. These are two total eclipses, which will be seen on August 12, 2026 and August 2, 2027, and an annular eclipse, visible on January 26, 2028. A very rare event that has been called the Trio of Eclipses and for which a specific logo has been created.

The eclipses are expected to attract thousands of international tourists

The eclipses can be observed from different points of our geography and are expected to capture the attention of both the scientific community and the public. and thousands of international tourists. The event poses logistical and security challenges, but also economic opportunities, which is why the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities has chosen to establish the Trio of Eclipses as a brand with its own visual identity.

An Interministerial Commission has been established for the preparation, organization and coordination of eclipses, made up of representatives of 12 other ministries and 16 Autonomous Communities. At the meeting held this week, the logo that the Ministry has designed in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) was announced.

The image visually represents the trio of eclipses using white circles and negative spaces. The composition also generates the silhouette of a telescope in a nod to the fundamental tool for astronomical observation. According to the portfolio in a statement, the logo is “a symbol of the collective gaze of a country turned towards the sky”.

“The telescope represents human curiosity, exploration and amplification of our vision to reach the distant and the extraordinary. It reminds us that we are facing a unique window to the universe, a spectacle that invites us to broaden our perspective.”said Juan Cruz Cigudosa, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Universities.

The Trio of Eclipses promises to become a social and cultural event, mainly due to its unique character. And, as the Ministry of Science explains, a total eclipse has not been seen on the Iberian Peninsula since 1905, and Spain will be one of the few places in the world from which it can be seen.
Furthermore, as stated by the CSIC, The last visible annular eclipse happened in 2005, and the last total could be seen in 1959, and only from the Canary Islands; A total solar eclipse had not been seen from the Iberian Peninsula since 1912.
