Once the Halloween celebrations are over, one of the most notable seasons in terms of marketing and communication begins: that of Christmas advertisements. Many international brands have already launched their proposals on the market; among them, the British supermarket chains, which on this occasion, have opted for humor and an optimistic tone to highlight the wide possibilities of their respective catalogs both when it comes to giving gifts and preparing the corresponding Christmas meals.

Sainsbury’s saves the holidays from the big good-natured giant

If last year the great good-natured giant, protagonist of Roald Dahl’s story, helped save Christmas in the Sainsbury’s advertisement, this time it is the supermarket that comes to his aid. When Annie and the company employees discover that the giant has fallen ill, they decide to go to him to bring him food and provide him with company during the holidays.

The good-natured giant stars in the Sainsbury’s advert for the third year

The spot, worked together with the creative agency New Commerical Arts, once again mixes magic and reality and shows the adventures that Sainsbury’s workers face touring the land of giants and facing trolls, blizzards and cliffs to be with their friend. The advert highlights Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference range, which includes a series of dishes prepared especially for the Christmas period, conveying the idea that good food is what brings people together.

This is the third time that the popular character is part of the company’s communication for the holidays. “The big good-natured giant has become a much-loved element of Christmas for our customers, so we wanted to bring him back for another adventure this year.” commented Radha Davies, Marketing Director of Sainsbury’s, according to Creative Salon. “At the heart of the story lies a simple idea: no one should be left without enjoying Christmas. We hope this year’s campaign offers plenty of festive fun, while celebrating the moments, people and food that make Christmas truly unmissable.”.

Tesco proposes a story of friendship

Tesco’s Christmas advert is titled “The Wrong Address”, created by BBH London, and features a reunion between two old friends. Taking advantage of the period of large holiday food orders, the supermarket tells a story that addresses typical holiday mistakes that all consumers can see themselves in, as well as the role Tesco plays in people’s lives, following its platform “Need anything from Tesco?” (Need something from Tesco?), launched earlier this year.

The ad stars Polly, a supermarket delivery girl who, upon discovering that Lizzie, an old school friend, has entered the wrong address for the delivery, decides to approach with the van. When Lizzie’s car breaks down, Polly offers to take her home, so that the trip becomes an endearing moment in which they both reminisce about the past, close old conflicts and strengthen ties.

The campaign is articulated under the brand’s claim, “Every little helps.” “Whether it’s incredible deals on your favorite products, unique and delicious foods and drinks, or festive experiences that bring families together, our goal is to help customers make Christmas a reality. Because, these days, every little detail counts.”said Suzanne Quinn, Customer Director at Tesco UK.

Trevor dinosaur and Connie doll return to Argos Christmas advert

For the fourth consecutive year, the Argos store chain launches its message alongside the dinosaur Trevor and the doll Connie, and they are joined on this occasion by actor Richard Ayoade, known for the series “The IT Crowd.” The advert, created by creative agency T&P, combines humor and nostalgia to reflect how the company has supported British consumers over the years.

The piece addresses a misconception that Argos only sells toys, a prejudice that has its origins in children’s habit of choosing their desired items from the company’s legendary catalogue. Ayoade, clinging to his childhood memories, manages to change his mind when he receives a visit from the brand’s already iconic mascots, now represented as ghosts, as happens in *A Christmas Carol*. Thus, they demonstrate that Argos is a one-stop destination that offers a wide variety of attractive, high-quality gifts, from cutting-edge technology to elegant homewares.

“Many of us fondly remember marking the items we dreamed of receiving for Christmas in the Argos catalogue. However, people may not always be aware of everything Argos offers today.” said Laura Boothby, Argos Campaign Director. “This year, Connie and Trevor return to show, with humor and charm, the great variety of our catalog”.

Lidl congratulates the holidays with a musical

Lidl United Kingdom leaves behind the emotional tone used in previous years and opts for humor and music for its Christmas 2026 advertisement. It stars actor Shaun Williamson, one of the legends of the emblematic series “EastEnders”, who covers the classic song “Merry Christmas Everyon”, by the group Slace. In this particular review of the topic, the lyrics allude to turkey, wine or appetizers that consumers can find on the supermarket’s festive menu to accompany their celebrations.
Along with Williamson, other well-known faces appear, such as former football player Chris Kamara, television presenter Kemi Rogers and comedian Abi Clarke.

Asda’s Christmas rave

Asda, for its part, wants to convey the message that it is not necessary to give up joy during these holidays, but expenses can be reduced. To do this, it has created, together with the creative agency Lucky Generals, a campaign that turns seemingly peaceful and cozy moments into authentic raves to the rhythm of “Animals”, the techno song created by Martin Garrix. It consists of four different spots that reflect peaceful and cozy scenes that quickly become moments of energetic celebration thanks to the supermarket’s low prices.

“The reality is that our clients do not want a less intense Christmas; They simply want to enjoy Christmas while spending less.“, commented Tom Hampson, Asda group marketing director, in a statement. “We want to show our customers that they don’t have to choose between a fantastic Christmas and affordable prices. By offering everything they need in one place, we help families enjoy the joy they want this Christmas, at prices that fit their needs.”.
